Portland coffee shop

Good mornings start with good beans

We roast in small batches and bake from scratch every day. Come in for a flat white, stay for the sourdough.

Our story

From a garage roaster to Mill Lane

Ember & Oak started in 2018 as a one-kilo roaster in a garage, sold at weekend farmers markets. The queue kept growing, so did the roasting schedule, and in 2021 we opened the doors on Mill Lane.

We still roast every batch ourselves - never more than twenty kilos at a time - so the coffee on your counter is days, not months, from the drum.

The kitchen bakes from scratch each morning: croissants laminated by hand, sourdough with a five-year-old starter, and a cardamom bun that regulars set alarms for.

Our space is built for lingering. Long oak tables, good light, and music that never gets in the way of a conversation.

From our regulars

Regulars say it best

  • The cardamom bun alone is worth crossing town for, but the flat white is the best in Portland. The staff remember your order by the second visit.

  • I work remotely from here twice a week. Great coffee, plenty of outlets, and nobody minds if you stay for hours.
    DR

    Daniel R.

  • It feels like a proper neighbourhood café - warm, unhurried, and the sourdough toast is genuinely excellent.
